Has the time come for a uPC?

Have a look at the picture: Have a look at the size of the gadget in her hands. It weighs 14oz.

Imagine this as an everyday PDA - do you think it’d be as portable as your PDA? Does the physical dimensions of it put you off, or make you want to trade in your PDA for it?

Your answer will probably determine how well it’d sell (expected Fall ‘04) in the consumer market. This is the OQO Model 01 “ultra-Personal Computer”, or uPC for short. We were really pushing when we put up the Model 01 as an everyday PDA for it is really made to compete in the ultra-small laptop/notebook market. With a 1GHz Transmeta processor, 256MB of DDRAM, a 20GB hard drive, on-board Bluetooth and WiFi(b) connectivity running on the full version of Microsoft’s Windows XP - all crammed into that elegant, highly portable yet modular form-factor - we think it’d do very well. Full specs on OQO’s website.

It would be nice if we could accept the Model 01; size and all, as the replacement for our PDAs and all our computing needs. That would mean having your desktop, laptop, and PDA all-in-one … and never, ever having to sync again (save perhaps with your mobile phone.)

Just don’t price it at the total cost of a desktop, laptop, and PDA: We’d want one, please.
