Walmart laptop on the cheap
Ok … Walmart.com (online-only deal) has a laptop, ECS 14.1″ Notebook Computer with Wireless Networking going for only $598.00!
We aren’t too surprised with the pricing … because most if its components are rather, uh … cheap. We couldn’t confirm this with what little information Walmart.com provides (it’s just stated as “imported” on the country of origin) but in Malaysia there’s a budget laptop manufacturer that goes by the name ECS too.
It specializes in putting together some really cheap stuff to form laptops that are sometimes marketed as desktop replacements. This particular model probably has an unrated battery pack that would give out 80 minutes’ worth on computing, max.
Really. Check out a similarly-configured model from ECS here and have a look at the specs yourself.
They surmised that since it’s gonna reside on your desk 99% of the time, that a battery serves no real purpose - which is true, in a perverse sorta way …
Other than perhaps the equivalent of a flashlight dry-cell for a battery, you get a decent desktop replacement with the usual port, accessories and drives. Not too bad at all - we just wished that we could check it out in-store before we buy, but alas it’s an online-only item.
