Networked PDAs to cost more in Malaysia

Malaysia, has in one fell swoop eliminated its fast-rising status of a PDA haven, angering the local PDA community and probably the ire of retailers, too.

The Star, a local daily reports that the Malaysian government has decided to slap an extra 10% sales tax on all PDAs equipped with Bluetooth and/or WiFi radios. This is in effect since 26 October 2004.

What a myopic, and no doubt greedy move by the authorities to cash in on the rising popularity of PDAs within the country. Ironically, the government is also known to be actively promoting technology connectivity to its people … Talk about biting your own ass.

‘Guess it’s back to shopping for your next PDA in neighboring Singapore - at least they sell Bluetooth+WiFi equipped Axims - which has never been available in Malaysia in the first place …

Thanks to MyPDACafe for the tip.
