Truly mobile broadband HSDPA: Bring it on!

Mobile broadband has taken a step closer to reality, with Nortel Networks demonstrating a 1.4mbps connection using HSDPA technology … which took place in Chateaufort, France, used a handset from LG Electronics slated for commercial release later this year, and achieved sustained downloads of music and files of 1.4mbps in a moving car.

This is fantastic and is as good as it gets towards making high-speed, mobile broadband connections a reality. According to Nortel in the report, HSDPA technology has a far easier upgrade path compared to 3G because all the network operators have to do is to upgrade some software on its equipment … provided they are running Nortel’s iron, of course.

HSDPA mobile phones are already in the market so we are looking forward towards having the chipset on smartphones and PDA phones - and not a moment too soon.

Any news from other network equipment manufacturers; Alcatel, Siemens? We’ll find out soon enough, as Nortel’s demo success should bring a rush of others trying to appease clients that their stuff is, you know - scalable :-P
