Forget WiMAX for now, heeeere’s HSDPA!

We are just so gratified to learn that HSDPA is getting the limelight it deserves in 2005. engadget has a post on Lucent’s real-world HSDPA demo at CTIA Wireless; streaming high-quality video and downloading a file thru a total bandwith of 3Mbps.

Mind you, this demo was done in a static environment of a booth in an exhibition hall. Remember: HSDPA is cellular network tech and this can happen even when mobile. It’ll really blow everyone’s minds if Lucent actually rigged up a truck and drove a bunch of the media boys out around The Big Easy instead.

Maybe we can look forward to Cingular doing that on their official HSDPA launch, which they are supposed to be testing in a few cities right now.

Sidenote: We’ve now got cellphones on HSDPA - where are the PDA phones and smartphones, where mobile high-speed data is most needed? Wait: The HTC Universal’s 3G is starting to look a bit dated now …

Thanks to engadget for the report.
