The state of US cellular networks - and how to bill

CTIA Wireless comes to a close, and we got the bunch of cellular networks’ CEOs all sitting down and attempting to tell the world in summary, of what they think of their industry and where they are heading.

CNET reports on some of their “interesting” comments, but we are generally unimpressed. A bit peeved, even. C’mon big boys: what’s complexity of operating a feature-rich handset got to do with how you deliver your services?

We think y’all are just really stumped as to how to charge your customers for all the wonderful services that can be accessed by them “feature-laden phones”.

Stop blaming and “warning” the handset manufacturers from building in “too much functionality” (as opposed to less functionality, going backward to the days of telegraphy?) Leave the task of pushing the right buttons for access to your services to us - the owner/operator of these gadgets.

If we want those services, we’ll get the right equipment. If we don’t, we’ll get simple, plain-vanilla handsets. That’s our choice, not yours.

Be man enough to stand up and say: “OK - how the hell are we gonna charge for all those high-speed video/MMS/SMS/TV access, without making our bills look like manual IRS filings?”
