How to make spectacular product launches, Sony-style

We marvel and admire companies such as Sony when it comes to incredible product launches.

Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said the company pulled all the strings it could to make sure there were 1 million PSPs ready for the North American launch … A big launch is important to Sony, Hirai said, but the company is also managing inventory to ensure a steady flow of PSPs to stores. “We don’t want to go dry for two months,” he said.

Why can’t PDA and Smartphone manufacturers emulate such feats? All we get are half-hearted “leak” attempts of new models, lots of hot-air talk on availability dates (and zero commitment at that), crappy distribution (when it finally appears for sale), and loads of user dissatisfaction thereafter.

The PSP is by no means a “new” product worldwide; no secret about what it can do or cannot do. Software and accessory support is nowhere near the levels PDAs and Smartphones enjoy.

So why is it that Sony can pull off spectacular product launches with complete user satisfaction, and maintain sales performances of its products long after; when PDAs and Smartphones barely make it to launch day with a whimper? It’s almost too disgusting and a total farce to think about …

When was the last time you got excited in anticipation of buying the latest PDA, PDA phone, or Smartphone?
